Chan Hampe Galleries seeks to cultivate and promote the contemporary visual arts of Singapore, increasing the exposure and value of Singaporean art and its contribution to contemporary art practice from this region.
By offering a diverse mix of exhibitions and programs, Chan Hampe Galleries fosters Singapore's emerging artists, celebrates Singapore's established artists, and seeks to expand the community of Singaporean art enthusiasts.
With its central location in the esteemed Raffles Hotel in Singapore's Bras Basah Cultural District, Chan Hampe Galleries serves as a focal point for discourse and discovery of Singaporean contemporary art.
Benjamin Milton Hampe is Co-Owner/Director of Chan Hampe Galleries, the Treasurer of the Art Galleries Association, and an External Assessor for the National Arts Council. Previously he was Gallery Representative at a commercial gallery in Australia specialising in Australian and South-East Asian contemporary art.
Between 2006 to 2009 he was employed by Australian art and cultural consultancy company Positive Solutions as Manager of Visual Art Projects providing curatorial research advice for clients including West Kowloon Cultural District, Shanghai EXPO 2010, Palm Jebel Ali (Dubai), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia), and Brisbane Domestic Airport Terminal Expansion. Public art curatorial and project management clients included Gold Coast University Hospital, Chinatown Mall Redevelopment (Brisbane), Darwin City Centre Redevelopment, Santos Place (Brisbane), and Southbank Cultural Precinct Playground (Brisbane).
In March/April 2010 - as part of an Asialink Arts Management Residency facilitated by the University of Melbourne - he curated exhibitions at Platform China Contemporary Art Institute (Caochangdi Art District, Beijing) and Pickled Art Centre (798 Art District, Beijing). Until 2010 he was also Co-Curator of International Digital Art Projects, a digital media arts organisation partnered with the Queensland University of Technology and the Beijing Film Academy with representatives in Asia, Australia, and Europe.
